If you like cooking but do not need a kitchen inside your room, UniLodge Carlton's Mensa shared kitchen is worth a look. Rooms have private bathrooms, while cooking and meals happen in the common area. At 609 Swanston Street, it is close to Melbourne and RMIT, with a useful balance of your own room and time around neighbours.

Lygon Street is a good place to wander and choose a meal, with pizza, pasta, coffee and Asian restaurants. The operator says major supermarkets are about a 400-metre walk or three tram stops away. For everyday groceries, there is a Woolworths at Lygon Court. Mr Dad Asian Supermarket is at 557 Swanston Street, so you can pick up sauces and snacks without going far. Pharmacies, bank branches and more chain shops are mainly across the CBD. Medical Hub @ RMIT is one nearby option for GP care. There is already a gym in the building, and Carlton and the city have other fitness options if you want to train elsewhere.

The University of Melbourne’s main campus is close enough to walk to, although the campus itself is large and your final few minutes depend on your teaching building. RMIT’s City campus is also within walking distance; the time varies by destination and route. Trams run along Swanston Street, making it easy to travel south into the CBD or north towards the university precinct; Melbourne Central and State Library stations are also within walking distance. Before your first class, save the building entrance, your teaching room and the nearest tram stop separately rather than estimating from the university name alone.

Public reviews are scarce; UniAcco displays one resident review marked as verified by the platform. The reviewer liked the shared kitchen, location, staff and security. One review cannot represent everyone’s experience, so ask about peak times in the kitchen, how common areas are cleaned and how maintenance requests are handled when you inspect.

UniLodge describes furnished rooms with private bathrooms, a desk, lamp, air conditioning, bar fridge and secure keycard access. Residents can use Mensa, a large shared kitchen and dining space, a 24-hour gym, an outdoor courtyard and barbecue facilities. Rent information includes utilities and unlimited Wi-Fi, and staff are onsite around the clock. The FAQ says a limited number of long-term parking spaces may be available, so ask separately if you need one. The pricing information is not enough to establish a reliable standard weekly range, so I have not treated a single rate as a typical price. When you enquire, confirm your dates, lease length and included bills together.

The building’s strongest points are its location and shared facilities. Before signing, confirm the weekly rent for your lease term, bills, bond and end date. Bedding and kitchenware packs are available to buy through the operator, so you do not need to bring everything from home. It is worth seeing the shared kitchen in person and checking whether the cooktops, fridges and dining space suit your routine. Have a look at the room’s outlook and street noise too. The university precinct is active during the day, so if you are a light sleeper, walk the route home in the evening as well.

If you study at the University of Melbourne or RMIT, want to walk to class and plan to use the gym or kitchen, UniLodge Carlton is worth adding to your inspection list. In your first week, learn the route to the shared kitchen, nearest supermarket and Swanston Street tram stop. The campuses are large and spread across several buildings, so save the location of your first class each day. If you prefer a fully independent set-up, ask detailed questions about how the shared facilities work before deciding.

Ask a Yeeliving adviser to compare rooms, lease terms and your route to class. Yeeliving’s student accommodation service is free. Referral cashback is paid only to the referrer, after the referred friend signs a lease and moves in; details are as shown on your account page.
